Every year a lot of students decide to study in the USA, and every year the same thing happens: they spend weeks reading old blog posts and then find out the rules have moved on. That’s a real risk right now. Visa processing, work options and some policies have shifted a few times recently, so what a senior told you at college may not hold anymore. This guide goes through the main things to sort out, with a reminder to check official sources before you act on any of it.
American universities give you a lot of freedom and American universities also let you explore subjects. A computer science student can take a design class on a whim and a business student might wander into psychology and stay. If you plan to study in the USA as an undergraduate you will often get a year or two before you have to commit to a major, which’s a big relief if you are not completely sure what you want yet.
Imagine a student with a dozen browser tabs open, every one of them a famous university. It feels like research, but the tabs are only showing names. A school that’s excellent for engineering can be ordinary for journalism, so if you want to study in the USA, work out your course first. Then dig into the details. What does the department actually teach? I wonder which professors are working on topics that interest me. Do students usually get internships. Where do graduates end up? Often a mid‑ranked university with a department in my subject gives me more, than a household name where my subject is an afterthought.
TOEFL and IELTS are accepted in all universities and a few schools also accept other tests. If I want to study in the USA I look up the TOEFL score for my program and book a test date early so that I can retake the TOEFL if the first result is too low. Many people need an IELTS attempt to reach the required score.
If you want to study in the USA on a student visa you need an I‑20 form. The university will send this form once it accepts you. You will agree to enroll. Then you must manage paperwork, pay fees and book an interview at a US embassy or consulate. Interview wait times can vary a lot between cities and months so apply soon as you are eligible. During the interview be prepared to answer questions, about your chosen course, why you chose this university and how you plan to pay. Answer honestly. Keep copies of all documents.
One caution. Immigration rules have changed more, than once recently. Immigration rules may change again. Whatever information you find or on a forum verify it on the official US government and embassy websites before you rely on it
Every school has its own list, so don’t assume. For most people who want to study in the USA, the application means transcripts, English test scores, a few essays, recommendation letters and proof that you can afford the fees. Some universities want SAT or ACT scores when you apply for undergraduate studies and some don’t. For masters programs some schools need GRE or GMAT scores and others make them optional. Look at the admissions page, for every school. Write down exactly what that school asks for.
A quick note about essays. Admissions officers are not impressed by a list of achievements because your resume already shows those achievements. A short honest account of something you did or something that went wrong and what you learned will usually beat a paragraph, about being passionate.
Nobody tells you how much admin there is at the start. You’ll have a bank account to open, a phone plan to choose, and somewhere to live to sort out, all on a campus that might be bigger than your entire college backhome. Students who study in the USA often say orientation week got them through it, mostly because that’s where they met other people who were just as lost.
Choosing to study in the USA is a big decision, but it feels much smaller when you take it in stages. Pick the course first. Read each school’s requirements yourself instead of relying on a friend’s memory. Keep a simple list of deadlines, and be straight with your family about the money. For visa and work rules, go to the official websites. The students who do best in 2026 will most likely be the ones who started early and stayed calm when something changed.
